A short thought, and an old frustration.

In many congregations we are in a mad rush. We race through the words as if the point were to finish them. I sometimes say, only half joking, that we pray to the cholent or the kugel — not to the Almighty. The whole country hurries; only the Hasidim seem to remember that we can wait an extra half hour for kiddush.

Prayer costs time. Not a great deal — a breath before a phrase, a second to imagine what the word means. But that little bit of time is the whole difference between saying the words and meaning them.

Give the prayer its time, and the congregation will feel it. I promise you they will.
